My research career

I have a degree in Biology from the University of León and a PhD in Process and Systems Engineering from the University of Valladolid (Cum laude and European Mention). During my PhD stage my research focused on the effect of the addition of vegetables to the anaerobic digestion of pig slurry and on the evaluation of the Anammox process and microalgae for the treatment of digestates. At that stage I was a visiting student at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU, 4 months) and at Wageningen University, The Netherlands (WUR, 3 months).

After working for 4 years as a postdoctoral researcher at Aalborg University in Denmark (studying anaerobic digestion of catch crops and developing a biorefinery process to obtain high quality proteins and biogas), I returned to Spain to work for 7 years as a Marie Curie postdoctoral researcher at IMDEA Energía and as a researcher at the Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León. During this stage I worked as a principal investigator on several topics, including: bioaugmentation of anaerobic processes, nitrogen recovery with gas permeable membranes and valorization of whey through the production of volatile fatty acids. In 2023 I joined the University of Valladolid as a Ramón y Cajal researcher.

My research

My research activity has always been focused on the management and treatment of agro-livestock by-products, with two main lines of research: 1) the optimization of anaerobic digestion and 2) the development of sustainable technologies for nutrient recovery.

My medium to long termvision is to continue developing my two lines of research as a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of Valladolid. Regarding anaerobic digestion, my research at this stage will focus on the production, extraction, purification and application in agriculture of intermediate compounds from the biological process of anaerobic digestion. Regarding the nutrient recovery line, my objective is to study, develop and scale up different nutrient recovery technologies (nitrogen and phosphorus) from agro-livestock by-products, in order to obtain technologies that can be certified as Best Available Techniques (BAT) for the sector.
